It started with the rains. Then the Brahmaputra broke its embankments, and within hours, entire villages in Assam were swallowed by muddy, rising water. Families who went to sleep in their homes woke up to find themselves trapped on rooftops, surrounded by a sea of brown water with nowhere to run.
The numbers are staggering — 47 dead, 40 missing, and over 7.21 lakh people affected across 30 districts. But behind every number is a mother clutching her baby on a boat, a father watching his harvest rot in the fields, a child shivering in a relief camp without clean water to drink.
They are not asking for much. A packet of biscuits. A bottle of clean water. A dry sheet to sleep under. But the scale of this disaster is so enormous that government relief alone cannot reach everyone in time. Many remote villages have been cut off for days — no roads, no electricity, no phone signal.
The threat is not only the flood. Water-borne diseases are spreading. Children are falling sick with diarrhea, fever, and infections. Without medical aid and clean drinking water in the next few days, the death toll will only rise.
